Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about following this lovable family go about their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to bask in the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
