An Powerful Milestone when Rosenior Shatters Barriers

"Rosenior represents a quality manager who understands football intimately, and that's the most important thing.

"But, as Chelsea's pioneering black player, I would be lying to claim this appointment doesn't move me."

These were the sentiments expressed by the former Chelsea winger, who made his groundbreaking debut for Chelsea's senior side off the bench back in April 1982.

On Tuesday, the club hired Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior, 41, to be their next head coach after the exit of Enzo Maresca.

The French club is within the multi-club BlueCo that also controls the London club.

Statistics show just twelve black managers – not including individuals holding interim positions – in England's top flight since it began 34 years ago.

"What really strikes me regarding Rosenior is that he grew up and developed his game not far from here, he knows this area," added Canoville.

"Whenever children see someone like Liam managing their club, someone who looks like them, from a similar background, who comes from a family that champions equality… that's profound and shows them that opportunities exist.

"So yes, it is a massive step for the club, for the capital, for all young person dreaming big.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, give him what he needs, and allow him to do his work."

What Exactly Does the Numbers Indicate?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit was appointed the Blues' head coach back in the nineties and became the top flight's inaugural African heritage manager.

A dozen years on, by 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the pioneering black English manager in the Premier League when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional present Premier League boss of colour.

The shortage of managers of colour throughout the English game is matched by an absence of representation in the boardroom.

According to the BFP 2023 study, forty-three percent of Premier League players are from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

Yet, analysis from Kick It Out found just 3.2 percent of executive and leadership management teams at most Premier League clubs are from ethnically diverse communities.

At senior coaching positions, based on data from 11 clubs, the percentage is two percent.

For all coaching positions – including senior roles – from the same 11 clubs, the statistic is just five percent.

"He's certainly made history by virtue of him being announced as a Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we want to see more of that," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists loads of ability that exists in the black and underrepresented communities... they want a chance to demonstrate what they can do. It is imperative to persist in striving to dismantle those obstacles once and for all."

Furthermore, the new appointee is set to become one of only four full-time British managers currently managing in the top flight – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – which lags behind the continent's remaining big five leagues in terms of national representation.

Sixteen of the 20 first division coaches in Italy are Italian, Eleven in La Liga in Spain, Twelve of the 18 in Germany while Ten of the 18 are French.

Current Blues caretaker manager Calum McFarlane said: "I have no doubt every aspiring British managers with a youth development pedigree are, to some degree no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It is truly motivating for young English coaches in the system to see an individual get that job with his background and we hope he will be highly successful."

It is vital to remember – he's there based on talent'

His father, Leroy, Liam's father, played for the likes of Fulham, the Hammers and Queens Park Rangers, and his managerial career culminating in a five-month spell in charge of the third-tier club Brentford back in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's Honours List for services rendered to tackling discrimination in football and beyond.

After Liam retired from playing he pursued his father's footsteps. He started penning articles for The Guardian, where in 2017 he acknowledged the lack of diversity among managers. He highlighted that race does not determine ability and said opportunities should be given based on qualification.

He also made the view he has often stated: how significant lack of diversity results in misunderstandings of players from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

In a podcast with The Athletic FC, Rosenior highlighted how his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "difficult" and "emotional", noting that he could relate to the Dutch international with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to follow him with a move from France to Chelsea in July.

In further newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted to being "embarrassed" to hear a staff member utter a homophobic slur. He pledged his support for the inclusion initiative and authored a public message to the former US President during his first US presidency, accusing him of "blatant" racism.

Rosenior has since made his name in the dugout – initially with Hull City, then Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney said this week Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" after their collaboration at Derby County.

The manager bid his farewells at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a six‑and‑a‑half‑year contract at Chelsea.

Chelsea had the Premier League's pioneering black manager in Gullit and the first black captain in Paul Elliott.
