Israelis mark second remembrance of 7 October attacks as Palestinian peace negotiations proceed
Israelis have come together across the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-led attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The incident saw more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the single most lethal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our aggressive opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the release of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer create a danger to Israel".
Memorial Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities postponed state remembrance events until 16 October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still occurred across the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the families of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was aired throughout Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was observed around the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a second day of indirect talks to review the provisions of the plan.
A senior Palestinian official involved in the discussions indicated that an evening round of negotiations started at evening in Egypt.
The source stated the earlier meeting ended without significant progress, because of conflicting views over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the first phase of the arrangement.
He added that the talks are "difficult and have yet to achieve any significant progress," but mentioned that facilitators are striving to close the gaps between the both parties.
Critical Matters in Talks
- A lasting ceasefire
- The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance deliveries
- After-conflict governance of the territory
Civilian Sentiment
In the city's public square previously, young Hagar - whose family member endured the incident on the gathering, where many attendees were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - told: "No place feels like home any longer and until all the hostages are released none of us will have peace of mind."
"When we see everyone home once more, we can relax once more. Then we can begin to heal," she added.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in the capital, people gathered to express their backing for the relatives of the hostages. Israel reports forty-eight remain in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be living.
Activist Atalia Regev explained: "It's necessary do any agreement necessary for the captives to return. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."
Surveys now frequently demonstrate that about the majority of Israelis want the hostilities to conclude in as payment for the release of the captives.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the area of the gathering, grieving people gathered to pay their respects.
From that location, the boom of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the heavy Israeli shelling carried on.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were reported in the early hours of Tuesday in the western district, sector and locality districts and in the eastern area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.
"As the night comes, the fear comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli bombing previously, described.
"We are afraid of the attacks. All the night we are lying together, holding each other, particularly my youngest child who places his head on me the entire evening."
"Every second we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the conflict will resume to us."
Health Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had accepted the bodies of several people by the afternoon, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the south region of the city reported two more fatalities had been delivered. One of them was died by Israeli troops while seeking help to the southern area, medical staff reported.
