Lando Norris Secures First F1 Drivers' Crown in Yas Marina In Spite Of Max Verstappen's Race Victory.

In a display of brave racing, the McLaren driver has sealed his maiden F1 world title by taking P3 at the Yas Marina race. That finish was sufficient for the 26-year-old driver, even though Red Bull's Max Verstappen took the victory and his teammate at McLaren Oscar Piastri finished in second.

The driver performed precisely what was necessary in an incredibly intense contest at the Abu Dhabi track, including a series of bold passing maneuvers, with flawless work from both himself and his McLaren squad.

A Momentous Achievement for Britain and McLaren

With this his first world championship, Norris is now the eleventh British driver to do so. This ends McLaren's title wait, which went back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton last won it. Furthermore, it had been 27 years since McLaren last secured the drivers’ and constructors’ double back in 1998.

It represents a stunning turnaround for the team, since a nadir in the middle of the last decade when they ended up ninth in the constructors’ championship. The Story of the McLaren

For his teammate Oscar Piastri, who had been the favorite for much of the campaign, there was obvious disappointment at stumbling in the final third. A series of poor performances and mistakes, such as crashing out in Baku, were expensive. Nevertheless, he finishes the season having shown he is also world champion material. Being so fast in only his third season in F1, with seven wins, remains a huge achievement.

Verstappen was also brilliant to take the title battle down to the last race. The Dutchman did all he could in Abu Dhabi with the win, but after fighting back from a significant deficit mid-season, he did not quite have enough to overhaul Norris, ending up just a handful of points behind.

Sealing the Deal with Clinical Execution

Norris closed out his title with clinical precision to take the crown that had been so close but remained just out of grasp as McLaren found themselves floundering at the last two races. First a DSQ in Las Vegas and then an questionable tactical decision in Qatar.

It was no little achievement for the driver in his seventh season in F1, each one with McLaren. He remained loyal to the squad even during some difficult periods, believing they would come good. That belief was rewarded in Abu Dhabi.

Norris performed a remarkable job to stick at his task, maintaining his composure and confidence during periods under pressure. After losing the championship lead to Piastri after Saudi Arabia, he nonetheless worked at getting the most from the car's potential.

The Title-Deciding Race

At the start, Verstappen held his lead through turn one, but the main contenders kept it clean. Piastri, starting on the more durable compound, was feisty and made a spectacular move to go round the outside of Norris to take second place.

It showed the McLarens were allowed to fight, but put Norris under threat from the Charles Leclerc. The first round pit stops saw Norris emerge in traffic, but he passed rivals within a lap and displayed great composure in his driving.

On lap 19, he made an incredibly bold move to dive past two cars at once, climbing to fourth and closing on Verstappen's teammate. The rival team told their driver to delay Norris, leading to a dramatic assault where Norris went up the inside, almost leaving the track.

The incident was looked at by the stewards, with a few nerve-wracking laps passing before a penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris settled the matter. This bold move unimpeded was crucial to his championship bid.

Diverging Fates

As Norris was crowned the first British driver to win the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the difference in fortunes between the two was stark. While the new generation fought for the title, Hamilton, the veteran, could manage only eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a disappointing conclusion to a dismal season with Ferrari.

His first season with the Scuderia had been greeted with excitement but has yielded what was easily his worst season ever, finishing sixth in the championship and failing to secure a podium. He has looked jaded in the final rounds and will aim to reset over the winter.
