We are analyzing video footage and photographs posted earlier today that depict the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the location from which the images were from was based on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the video.
Identifying other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
