On the eve of his sixth anniversary at the helm, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his longevity in North London is directly connected to delivering trophies.

The Journey So Far: The Arteta Era

The Spanish coach took over on the 20th of December in 2019 and promptly led the team to an FA Cup victory within months. However, that initial silverware remains his sole top-tier trophy since succeeding Unai Emery.

“Absolutely,” Arteta responded upon being asked about staying beyond 2027. “However, it is about today. And a lot of things need to fall into place in the coming months as well to deserve that opportunity.”

Saturday night brings the anniversary with a match versus Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal faced just after his role was made public.

Present Challenges

With chasing Manchester City set to face West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal could be displaced top spot in the Premier League prior to their fixture. The manager referenced the record-breaking achievements as proof they are close. “Consider the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the level we are at.”

Arteta concluded, “This is a standard that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And our ambition is to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the proper course to winning.”
