Preparations for Trump-Putin Summit Delayed Days After Hungarian Capital Talks Announced

Currently exist "no arrangements" for US President Donald Trump to confer with Russia's Putin "in the near term", a administration representative has stated.

Last Thursday the US president indicated he and the Russian president would meet in Hungary's capital within two weeks to examine the Ukraine conflict.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the White House said the two had had a "productive" call and that a meeting was no longer "required".

The White House withheld further information on why the talks had been put on hold.

Background Context

The US president had discussed a Budapest summit via telephone with Putin, a just prior to hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Some reports suggested his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with insiders claiming Trump had pressured him to give up large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Moscow.

Yet, on Monday the American president embraced a truce plan supported by Kyiv and EU officials to pause the war on the existing battle lines.

"Let it be cut in its current state," he stated.

Russia has consistently objected against freezing the existing front lines.

Moscow was solely focused on "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister stated on Tuesday, implying that freezing the front line would simply constitute a brief pause.

Negotiating Stances

The "underlying reasons" of the war needed to be addressed, Lavrov emphasized, using Moscow's terminology for a set of extensive requirements that involve the recognition of complete Moscow control over the Donbas as well as the demilitarisation of Ukraine – a non-starter for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

The Ukrainian president said discussions about the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the sole subject that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the provision of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with the US leader recently preceded speculation that the United States was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukraine that could potentially strike Russian territory.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the Tomahawks issue that had pressured the Kremlin to engage in discussion. The talk about the weapons systems had proven to be a "valuable contribution" in negotiations", he remarked.
