Prison Shock: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Time in Prison

He contested the legal system and justice prevailed.

Sixty days following getting a quarter-century plus sentence for seeking to “destroy” Brazil’s political system, former president Jair Bolsonaro finally appears jail-bound.

Anticipated Incarceration

The convicted coup-monger – who has been living under residential detention in his estate while a set of court processes and challenges unfold – is widely expected to be jailed in the next few days, during increasing speculation that he will be moved to a notorious high-security penitentiary.

Past Remarks on Inmates

During Bolsonaro’s long political career, the conservative ex- military man displayed scant compassion for the country's prison population.

“For what reason must we provide these scoundrels a comfortable existence?” he once pondered. “They should just get fucked, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro stated: “If you don’t want to wind up there, you simply need is not sexual assault, abduction or rob.”

Incarceration Location Debate

However the idea of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has horrified backers, a group of four this week visited the facility in an seeming attempt to discourage the supreme court from transferring him there.

Senator Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was one of the visitors, said he expected the elderly leader to be jailed in the coming fortnight and feared his location could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s serious gut problems – the consequence of a life-threatening knife attack during the last election race – signified it would be dangerous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His condition is highly critical. He cannot to manage if they take him to Papuda … It could be awful,” he commented, who also expressed concern about cramped cells and the quality of prison meals.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas remembered witnessing cells containing 40 inmates: “That is practically one square metre per detainee.

“We spoke to the prisoners and they complain, naturally, of the awful food,” continued the senator.

Allies Speak Out

The senator isn't the lone figure voicing opinions prior to the one-time head of state's anticipated detention.

Authoring in a leading publication, another ally, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” political career and alleged Brazil was about to see “the largest unfairness in its past”.

“This is an injustice that erodes the spirits of many Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Mixed Public Opinion

It is possibly accurate considering the significant support Bolsonaro retains on the conservative side. But his anticipated imprisonment has also pleased the hearts of numerous other people who feel he ought to be imprisoned for conspiring to prevent his successor from taking power – and even plotting to have him assassinated.

Reimont Otoni, a representative for the current leader's allied group, commented: “Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be sent in a dungeon. No one wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in solitary confinement. No one wishes Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to lie on concrete. We desire him to receive proper handling – but proper care while incarcerated. He must not carry on being his own prison warden for his lifetime.”

He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have spent years applauding the tough treatment of convicts, had abruptly woken up to their rights. “Just now has the conservative fringe – which has repeatedly asserted that human rights are not for offenders – chosen to tour a jail to find out what conditions are actually like,” he said.

“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he deserved “humiliating, insulting handling”.

Possible Jail Environment

In spite of talk that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which currently contains about thousands of prisoners, his probable location looks to be a nearby penitentiary for law enforcement and other “special” detainees called Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

His potential cell are considerably more adequate than those in the larger jail, although nevertheless a distant from the luxury Bolsonaro experienced while occupying the spectacular official residence, approximately a short distance away.

As per information, the cell Bolsonaro could likely occupy in Papudinha has about 24 square meters – approximately the area of two parking spaces – and includes a 12 sq metre bathroom with a bathing area and a 130 square foot veranda. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a set and even a cooler in his room as long as they were donated by his loved ones,” the report indicated.

Partisan Reactions

He condemned the speculated plan to send the ex-president to Papuda as “an act of revenge” on the part of the judicial authority who presided over Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will rule on his fate in the {
