A whistleblower has disclosed an official investigation that British authorities failed to secure sensitive technology enabling Afghanistan's rulers to locate Afghans who collaborated with western forces.

Data Breach Endangers Numerous at Risk

The whistleblower, identified as Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the security lapse were advised to move homes and change their mobile numbers to protect themselves from militant forces.

MPs are looking into the UK government's management of a catastrophic breach of personal details involving almost nineteen thousand individuals who had applied to relocate to the United Kingdom to escape the Taliban.

The Information Breach Was Discovered

A spreadsheet with their personal data, comprising identities, contact details and in some cases relative details, was inadvertently disclosed by a worker employed at British military command in early 2022.

The breach came to light in late 2023, when the names of multiple applicants who had applied to settle in the UK were posted on social media.

Militant Technology

Aftermath of the Security Lapse

Early investigations submitted to the committee estimated that approximately fifty kin and co-workers of individuals impacted by the leak had been killed.

A gag order concerning the breach was put in force in late 2023 and restricted all details about it from being made public until mid-2025.

Protective Actions

Given injunction limitations, Person A and the aid group she collaborated with advised affected households they were working with that they had “concerns that certain devices had been intercepted”.

“We advised that they moved if they could and altered their mobile numbers. These represented the crucial data that, should militant forces acquired this information, would lead to them being traced,” Person A explained.

Challenged Assessments

The whistleblower disputed that internal investigation conducted by a former official had been incorrect to state that the possession of the records by the Taliban was “not significantly alter current risk levels”.

“The crucial point is that these individuals are not standing up to the Taliban; they are in hiding. The primary issue involves past work history.”

The source explained disturbing abuse experienced by concerned people, comprising electric shock torture, waterboarding, and violent assaults.

“Instances include four-year-old children who have had their arms broken to force relatives to disclose hiding places,” she testified.
