The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, including the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in designing sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including various looks for her American tour following her marriage.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
- Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
- Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.
The fashion world mourns the loss to a true visionary whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
