The Two Fatalities Revealed in the Ivy League School Incident as Authorities Press On With Search for Gunman.

Two students who lost their lives in the weekend's mass shooting in Providence were honored at the start of the week – as a manhunt for their shooter persisted following the freeing by local law enforcement of the single suspect detained in connection in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

The student Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was described as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, according to the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which paid tribute to her at a service on Sunday.

Her role included the vice-presidency of Brown’s division of College Republicans of America, as the club stated. The White House press secretary also shared sympathies online, stating: “There are no words. Thinking of her family and friends, especially her parents.”

MukhammadAziz Umurzokov

The other person killed was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his freshman year at the prestigious university, family members said.

The victim's identification was verified by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He had big dreams of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and helping people,” his sibling Samira said in a memorial statement.

The Shooting Incident

An additional nine individuals were wounded in the violent event in the engineering building of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.

Officials stated by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-old male arrested in a raid at a Hampton Inn about approximately 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was released from custody.

“A perpetrator remains free,” stated Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you need to change course and go in another, and that is the current situation over the last approximately one day.”

Community Anxiety

Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, noted: “We know that this is likely to cause fresh anxiety for our city”.

The gunman began shooting inside a room in the building on Saturday afternoon, firing more than 40 rounds from a handgun, a police source told the Associated Press.

Police that raided the lodging seized two handguns and magazines when the individual was detained, as was reported.

The Wounded Victims

Of the nine hurt, a single scholar was released from the hospital, mentioned Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in critical but stable condition, and another was critically ill, officials reported on Sunday.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the student's death in a tribute. “Our profound condolences go out to Mr Umurzokov’s family, loved ones, and fellow students and mourn the loss of his potential.”

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the country's seventh most historic university with about 7,300 undergraduate and postgraduate students, occurred during one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings reported in the US so far in 2025, according to records.
