Vince Gilligan Shares He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will Conclude... Currently.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that Pluribus would emerge as a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
About the Overwhelming Audience Reaction
One could easily to get swayed by the rampant praise and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to avoid both.
“It's like being force fed something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
A Pressing Query: Will the creator Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff aren’t being guided by fan response, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… sort of.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to throw out a good idea for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
