While Beachgoers Fled Danger, Popular Image Shows Lifeguard Running ‘Full Speed’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as local of Bondi, views the iconic beach as her personal space. On a recent weekend night, she, similar to other neighbors, detected cracking sounds ringing out across the suburb.

“We all thought the same, but I thought it was daylight and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. She left her residence, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw told her something was wrong.

Positioned on the avenue, conversing with a pair who had run up the slope soaked, she noticed someone moving up from behind. It was a beach patrol officer, dashing in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while holding a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. It was just him running in the direction that everyone was trying to get away from, and hauling that big kit and unshod … He was sprinting into something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would instruct you to move in the reverse way.

“Without a second thought, but just fully pedal to the metal running.”

A Powerful Moment of Bravery Amidst Crisis

The photograph Ching captured of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many moments of courage in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, officers and ambulance crews attending to dozens of victims.

Local Response and Assistance

Doolan’s account was a single example among several to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the beach facility next to the location of the violence transforming into a makeshift hospital. Reports indicate that colleagues were also seen responding bravely, such as going into the surf to save people who were struggling.

After the events, statements of appreciation flooded in. A social media message shared thanks for the lifeguards who demonstrated that “kindness will always triumph over evil”.

The group of lifeguards later shared a statement, noting they were “processing what transpired”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your thoughtful messages and solidarity. We are overwhelmed by the compassion for our responders,” the group stated. “When ready, we will recount our experiences in the aim that it aids those impacted.”

Council Recognition

Waverley council, the local authority that hires many full-time lifeguards, remarked that the team performed exceptionally from the second the violence commenced right into late that nighttime.

“There have been so many emotional accounts, but the widely-circulated photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” said a local official.

“Our lifeguards show altruism every day in keeping our iconic coastlines safe for the public, but what we observed on Sunday should be commended.

“During this time of sorrow and process the horror of this heinous terrorist attack, I think it is vital that we focus on just how much good we have observed in the presence of such darkness.”
