Why PSG Are Embracing Local Talent to Protect Their European Title

Homegrown players were once a relatively rare sight on Paris St-Germain team sheets.

Until recent seasons, the team's QSI era was spearheaded by high-profile signings from elsewhere.

The Shift in Strategy

Several PSG's talented academy products during those years, such as Kingsley Coman and Mike Maignan, left Paris before establishing themselves in the Parisian setup.

The club's focus on French talent in the past few years has witnessed the likes of Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue lead last year's successful campaign.

Building From Within

Now, PSG are looking to go one further and build around their local prospects, a change that has been catalyzed by an early-season injury crisis.

With Dembele, Doue and Achraf Hakimi among the long-term absentees, there have been as many as five academy graduates - all from the French capital - in the starting lineup this season.

Advanced Training Facilities

The club's comprehensive youth development center has been essential to their plan.

Previously, PSG relocated from the Camp des Loges to the nearby state-of-the-art PSG Campus.

The recently opened complex, which were formally opened a year ago, accommodate the senior squads along with their development squads over a 59 hectare area.

These include 16 pitches, housing for 140 young players, learning centers and even a vegetable garden.

Strategic Vision

At an event to commemorate the five-decade history of the development program's inception, football executive Luis Campos explained that the organization's vision were to incorporate "additional players from the local region" in the main roster.

"The philosophy is to have prospects in all youth categories who can advance up the academy," states Campos.

A straighter trajectory from the academy to the first team can also relieve the organization's need on the transfer market, the sporting advisor pointed out.

For Campos, "going to the supermarket frequently doesn't produce you a superior chef."

"What's important is to be progressing in the right direction, not to accumulate talents," he adds.

Academy Integration

The experienced football administrator also recounted a meeting between Luis Enrique and the development team, in which the Spanish manager set out his "tactical approach" rather than dictating particular drills or playing systems to follow.

The Spanish coach's arrival previously, Campos explains, was notably favoured by "readiness to play youth prospects as soon as they're ready."

Rising Stars

Facing Barcelona in October, it was Senny Mayulu, who featured prominently and found the net in PSG's surprising 2-1 victory.

Warren Zaire-Emery, Quentin Ndjantou and Ibrahim Mbaye were also featured in the win over the Catalans, while teenage Mathis Jangeal was among the substitutes, having made his senior debut a few days beforehand.

Mayulu, who registered the decisive goal in the Champions League final victory over Inter in May, has been part of the promising developments of the new direction.

Adaptable Talent

The 19-year-old central player, a midfielder by trade, particularly attributes his half-century of senior appearances to his adaptability.

After beginning in each Ligue 1 fixture since the early season, Mayulu has been deployed in various roles, from defensive duties, to engine room, to striker position.

Youth Development Direction

Yohan Cabaye has been the overseer of the club's academy since 2024, having initially joined the academy structure soon after the conclusion of his professional career.

The ex-international player praises extensively Mayulu, emphasizing the way he returned strongly from injury various instances in his formative years.

"At the start of his tenure the academy, he was finding it difficult to finish full seasons," Cabaye says. "He demonstrated such strength of character that he always came back, though."

Special Prospect

Zaire-Emery, as the former Newcastle man characterizes him, is an special case.

"We can't use him as an example, otherwise you'd have multiple young players knocking on Luis Enrique's office," he says.

Now on his fourth season in the main roster, the emerging talent has been leading the affected Parisians from an increasingly familiar right-back role.

Resurgent Performance

Following difficulties through periods during last season, the French international is regaining the explosive form that first saw him break into the professional setup.

Following his recall to the national team earlier this month, the Paris native stated his stint with the under-21 national team assisted in regaining his confidence.

"I've focused on myself, I continued working and put in the effort," he stated before the match against Bayer Leverkusen.

PSG have benefited significantly, with Zaire-Emery acting as the leading example yet again for the latest academy products of Parisians.

Rival Interest

A key part of maximizing the capital city prospects is resisting approaches by competing organizations.

Utilizing dedicated recruitment staff observing youth football in the capital and its surroundings, PSG are aiming to enhance their influence on the rich source of prospects at their immediate vicinity, from which their Ligue 1 and Champions League opponents have long been recruiting players.

Academy Achievements

If youth championship results are any indication, PSG will possess numerous talents to advance in the coming campaigns.

The development squad retained their league title this previous year and have excelled during the European competitions, which has predictably generated attention from the outside.

"We often have between numerous talent spotters from France and abroad visiting our development fixtures," Cabaye notes.</
